Rip off gravy and poor food and shocking service - We went for Sunday dinner . That was our first mistake they had no roast potatoes or Yorkshire pudding so how can they advise still serving Sunday dinner. Then we ordered 2 pies and a so called large kids meal 2 mistake . Took over an hour to come when place was half empty. People getting there food well before us after we have ordered well before them . The food come eventually 3 mistake . My pie come with a dash of gravy and the inside was all pastry and and gravy Inside it was spot the filling . My dads meal was worse chicken and leak pie all pastry which he never touched was awful . Then no gravy or chips but lumpy awful mash but again no gravy . Who serves pies and lumpy mash without gravy and then have the brass neck to charge you 1.95 for a thimble full of gravy . My son so called big kids dinner was tasteless and very small . I would not have like to see the small kids dinner must be for under one year olds . My son said it’s rubbish here and he was not joking . Charged just short of 25 for 2 adults and a kids meal .shocking it must have cost less than a tenner to make all 3 all frozen rubbish . Then I heard them laughing saying we are not a charity or the Salvation Army when I raised an issue about the rip of gravy price or the over priced food . Never I have ever been charged in any pub or restaurant for a bit of extra gravy cheapest thing in the world to make and can make litres of it for nothing . I will never be going bck to this place ever again shocking food even worse service and the mother and daughter attitude are disgraceful. Trying to laugh at customers who are paying your wages . Disgraceful. The place looks like it’s stuck in the 80s needs a renovation probably why they charging so much for gravy.

Thwaites Pubs 1st Bad Review ... Popped in for lunch...I so wish we hadn't. - Opening the doors we were instantly hit by the strong smell of bleach, well...at least it clean we thought! there were a few small tables to choose from, but all the seats were very grubby. The menus (equally as grimy & dirty as the seats) seemed to be full of all things fried but I did find a 'Roast Ham & Mustard Sandwich with side salad, my husband chose the steak & onion baguette. When ordering, I asked for a bitter lemon to be told they didn't do it, so chose tonic water with a slice of lemon. My husband went to pay by card, only to be told it's cash only, so we had to rummage through my bag and our pockets to pay. We sat at a small sticky table, with 4 grimy/sticky chairs, our drinks were handed to us, no lemon in my glass, so asked for a slice of lemon (again) only then did they mention they didn't have lemon. We then sat waiting & waiting for the food to arrive. We were the only people in there apart from the staff, so not sure why such a very long delay. The two staff were preoccupied with other things so we sat and waited some more. The food did eventually arrived, and didn't look too bad. BUT the roast ham was not roast ham, but the cheapest of processed & preformed round packed 'pink meat with white bits in it', smothered in a pungent strong mustard (covered the taste of the meat I suppose) My husbands Steak Baguette was in his words 'passable'. We left wishing we'd not gone in there, and have agreed we will never return. The whole place seems to be kitted out as a night club, with huge speaker everywhere and once outside. Its never a good sign when you exit a place feeling dirty and grubby. A definite seedy place that we won't visit again.

Thwaites Pubs 2nd Bad Review ... We had pre ordered an afternoon - We had pre ordered an afternoon tea for my grandmother’s birthday. When the waiter took our drink orders we asked when the afternoon tea would be served, he casually said in a moment. Well, the moment was 40minutes later! We were just about to put our coats on and walk out considering the length of time we had to wait! But unfortunately in the distance I could see our afternoon teas coming. The sandwiches were extremely dry, the bread was all stale and crusty as though the sandwiches were left out for hours. After waiting 40minutes I expected the sandwiches to be at least fresh. There was barely any filling in the sandwiches. I left more than half of mine. I decided to then have my scone and open my jam pot, to my dismay, someone had already scooped some out! I had to ask for a replacement! Very careless! The only saving grace was the apple cake. Won’t be returning!

Thwaites Pubs 3rd Bad Review ... SCANDALOUS 'eat out to help out' RIP OFF!!! - I have frequented this restaurant for many years .... it’s always been good value (not the biggest portions or best quality) but a fair price for what you get. This is until yesterday when I was a guest of my best friend’s 82 year old Mum who was treating me to lunch under the Government backed scheme for Mon, Tues & Wed through August. When we arrived every table had a photocopy of a revised menu which was shorter than normal and the Manager claims “a better quality menu”. The price was displayed “you pay £7.95, the Government pay £7.95”. This is DOUBLE the normal price. On further investigation it transpires this double priced menu is available only on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (I.e. the days the Government are paying 50% of our meals and the individual pays the other 50%). But clearly it is no saving to the individual diner and is what can only be termed as embezzlement of Government funds. I was disgusted and took the matter up with the Manager, Steve, who was a seething ball of arrogance and nothing short of rudeness personified. I cannot believe the bare faced audacity of the Manager and I intend to report his unethical behaviour at a time that is a struggle for many and a Government pot that is already vastly depleted through the uncertain times of Covid 19 and should in no way be depleted further to line a greedy pub owner’s pockets. How can this man sleep at night? There are far better, honestly run, restaurants in the area offering a genuine 50% discount under the Government incentive and if I were you I’d avoid Shippons at all costs.
